The upshot:

Rational(ish) summer solstice is a ton of fun every year and feels like a major community event. But it’s missing a lot of the unique, sacred feel that rationalist winter solstice has. How can we change this?

I have a proposal for next year that I’d love to find people to champion and take charge of big parts of:

There’s a big island in the middle of San Francisco Bay called Angel Island that you can reserve for big events and for camping. With proper planning we can pretty much have the run of the place and design events, rituals, and ceremonies that take advantage of uHH BEING ON AN ACTUAL ISLAND?

Ritual is practically built in: journey to another world, the wonder of discovery, and the feeling of togetherness. We could have an extended smolstice for campers from Friday to Sunday and a huge swolestice for the whole community right in the middle of that on Saturday.

Vibes:

Things that could happen:

Friday smolstice: Potentially 122 reservable camping spots from Friday afternoon to Sunday morning (some spots are at points further away on the island)

Saturday swolestice: ~ unlimited attendees from the first public ferry at 9am until the last ferry at 5pm on Saturday

Evening ritualstice: Up to 400 non-camping attendees staying Saturday until 9pm for dinner and sunset ceremony taking a specially chartered ferry home
